The Friends are a volunteer organization organized by the Pennsylvania Parks & Forests Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Our mission is to conserve, support, and protect the park's resources by promoting education, responsible recreation and stewardship for present and future generations.​

Join the Friends of R. B. Winter State Park at our next board meeting on Wednesay, August 6th at 6:00 PM in the Environmental Learning Center (ELC).

As always, the Board Meeting is open to the public- whether you have loved R. B. Winter State Park for years, or have just discovered this special place, we welcome you to join us.

Stop by the Environmental Learning Center anytime between 1:00 and 4:00 PM to learn about the history of Raymond B. Winter State Park. Photographs and historic documents will be on display! Learn about Raymond B. Winter and the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and see how the park changed since 1933.

CCC Walk and Talk

Join the park educator for an interpretive walk to learn about the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC). We will visit several spots in the park that were built by the CCC in the 1930s to commemorate the work they accomplished at Raymond B. Winter State Park. Please meet at the Environmental Learning Center for a brief introduction on the park's history. We will remain on paths or trails, but participants are still recommended to wear close-toed walking shoes.

Timber Trek​

Join our park educator on a guided nature hike through the Rapid Run Natural Area to learn about the region's logging history and current forests. This hike is 1-mile loop on the Rapid Run Nature trail. The trail may have some roots, holes, and other obstacles, but it is easy to navigate. Participants are recommended to wear durable shoes and bring water. Please meet at the Beach House!

Sun Printing​

Stop by the Environmental Learning Center anytime between 1 - 4 PM to make a fun nature craft! Using special paper and the power of the sun, we can create unique prints with natural objects and stencils. The paper may take time to dry so please plan to hang out around the learning center while we wait!

 

This activity does require a sunny afternoon with light cloud cover. In case of rain or dense clouds, we will offer a substitute craft.

Meteor Showers 101​

If you look up at the night sky from mid-July to late-August, you may experience the beautiful phenomen called the Perseids Meteor shower. You may even notice an abundance of shooting stars, or meteors, during its peak from August 11-13. What is a meteor, and why are we seeing so many shooting stars during the late summer? Join the park educator for a presentation into shooting stars, meteor showers, how to best view them, and much more so you are well prepared for your next star gazing experience.

 

Please meet at the Environmental Learning Center on Saturday, August 9th at 3 PM, for this presentation.

Evening Hike

Join the park educator to experience how R.B. Winter State Park evolves from day to night. We will be walking our 1.09-mile Rapid Run Nature Trail and learning about the side of nature we don't normally get to experience. Please meet at the Beach House at 7:30 PM.

 

The Rapid Run Nature Trail does get darker earlier than the rest of the park due to its dense tree canopy. Participants are welcome to bring red flashlights if they feel comfortable. Red tape will be provided to cover regular white/yellow flashlights. We highly encourage wearing durable shoes, applying insect repellent, and bringing water.

Little Naturalists: Wonders of the Moon​

Little naturalists, ages 3-7, are invited to join our park educator to learn about the Earth's Moon. We will be listening to a short story about the Moon, then we will be crafting our own Moon mobile to hang at home!. Please meet inside our Environmental Learning Center.

Perseids Meteor Shower Watch

Every year hundreds of meteors travel through Earth's atmosphere, showering us with a beautiful display of streaks of light or shooting stars. Visit Raymond B. Winter State Park to experience this natural phenomon at its peak! Please bring blankets or chairs for your comfort. Children must be accompanied with an adult. 

 

Please only bring red flashlights or cover cellphone/flashlights with red paper/cellopane. Any lights will distort our visibility at night and make it difficult to see meteors.

 

Meeting Location: Walkway (Fishing area) below the dam parking lot

Parking: Please park in the lower lot to the west of the beach. If you park in the dam parking lot, please back in so the headlights aren't visible at departue. 

 

This program may be canceled due to poor weather or cloud cover.

Intro to Geocaching

Celebrate International Geocaching Day at RB Winter State Park! 

 

Geocaching is a fun outdoor treasure hunt you can do all around the world. Join our park educator to learn about the different types of geocaches, how to use your phone or a GPS to locate them and test your skills with caches hidden in the park. This activity is recommended for all-ages, and it may become your family's next favorite outdoor hobby. We have a limited supply of GPS units available. Please meet in the Environmental Learning Center for a brief introduction before we search for some of the caches in the park.

Beginner Birders​

Join our park educator to learn the basic skills in finding and identifying birds. Please meet in the Environmental Learning Center for a brief introduction and to learn how to use binoculars and field guides. After, we will embark on a short, easy walk to observe the birds at Raymond B. Winter State Park.

 

This program is recommended for beginner birders of all ages! We will have a limited supply of binoculars and field guides, but guests are encouraged to bring their own supplies if they prefer.

Families are invited to participate in our monthly Homeschooling Summer Series at Raymond B. Winter State Park! Certain programs will be recommended for a specific age group. 

 

Trees are one of our most valuable resources, and our forests are rooted (pun-intended) deeply into Pennsylvania History. Join us as we explore the natural history of the forests at Raymond B. Winter State Park. Participants will practice identifying common trees, hike our Rapid Run Nature Trail, and more, to connect with our towering trees. This program is recommended for families with children 12 and above. Most of this program will be outdoors if the weather allows.

Gyotaku: Fish Printing

Gyotaku is a Japanese tradition combining nature and art with unique prints. "Gyo" meaning fish and "taku" meaning rubbing. After catching a prized fish, people often memoralized their catch by creating a fish print using paper and ink. Stop by the Environmmental Learning Center anytime between 1:30 and 4 PM to create a print of your favorite fish! Rubber fish models will be provided for this activity, so it is not necessary to bring a real fish.

Nature Photo Scavenger Hunt

Beauty exists everywhere at Raymond B. Winter State Park! Participate in our Nature Photo Scavenger Hunt by exploring the park to photograph the given prompts. This activity is perfect for families and all-ages! Please meet at the Environmental Learning Center to receive your list. Small prizes will be available for those that complete the activity and return before 4:00 PM.

Bird Call Bingo

Join our park educator for a fun game night at Raymond B. Winter State Park! We will briefly review calls and songs from popular birds often spotted (and heard) in our park. Then, we will test your birding ears for a few rounds of bingo. Small prizes will be available for our bingo winners!

 

Please meet in the Environmental Learning Center. This program is recommended for all ages!

Little Naturalists: Marvelous Monarchs

Little naturalists, aged 3-7, are invited to fly to Raymond B. Winter State Park to learn about our incredible monarch butterflies. We will be reading "Monarch! Come Play with Me" by Ba Rae to explore their life cycles and compare their development to our own. If we have clear weather, we may go on a short walk to visit a patch of milkweed to look for wild caterpillars and butterflies. If it rains, we will remain inside for a craft and game. 

 

Please meet inside the Environmental Learning Center at 11 AM.

Girl Scouts Love State Parks: Stream Safari

Girl Scouts are invited to explore the outdoors at Raymond B. Winter State Park on September 13th for the Girl Scouts Love State Parks Weekend 2025. Join our park educator to visit a mountain stream in the park to learn about our waterways. We will be catching, observing, and identifying the critters living in the stream to learn about water quality, biodiversity, and the importance of healthy water. 

 

Registration REQUIRED: Please register using the button above or by clicking here. Spots are limited! Registration will close on September 10th at 12:00 PM.

Meeting Location: Emailed to registered participants.

Attire: Please wear clothing and shoes that you are not afraid to get a little wet or dirty.
